30th July: Andy Webster Memorial Run [Top]

This year's Andy Webster Memorial Run will take place on Monday 6th September.

The run starts at 7pm from the club house and is approx 5km. The twist is that it is a 'limp-wristed' run. That means that you estimate how long it will take you and there is a prize for the male and female who gets closest to their estimated time. Easy you might say but you are not allowed to wear a watch! It will cost £1 to enter with all the money going to a Charity.

This event is open to all club members over the age of 14 but this year there will also be a shorter 1 mile course starting at 7.05pm for our younger members so that everyone can join in.

Please also bring some food/drink with you, as there will be a club social afterwards.

4 July: Newcastle Relays - report & results [Top]

Staffs Moorlands ran out clear winners with Kyle Fowler producing the fastest time of the day on the last leg to overtake Newcastle, with Trentham 3rd.

Kyle covered the course in 4.39 with Newcastle's new signing John Dutton recording 4.44.

Trentham retained their title in the Ladies category with Newcastle's Cath Dulla recording the fastest leg (5.21).

Staffs Moorlands also ran out winners in the U15 Girls and Ladies Vets races, who also supplied the fastest legs by Katie Hughes (5.44) & Kerry Marchant (5.37).

Contrary to the result announced on Saturday winners of the 'Mixed' category were Newcastle Upstarts, leading home Trentham and Newcastle. This was due to a team being entered in the wrong category.

This means that Numpty Nevilles of Uttoxeter were the winners of the U15 Boys race!

Well done and many thanks to all the teams who took part and the volunteers who helped set up the course, marshal, etc, etc.

We hope you enjoyed it and will hopefully see you all again next year!

10 May: Kai's Leaving Do [Top]

Kai will be moving back to Germany at the end of this month and we didn't want to let him go without saying goodbye.

So everyone is invited to join him for a curry on Thursday 13th May at Annisee in Newcastle. The evening will commence at 7.30pm and will cost £12 each, for this we will have poppadums, curry of choice, rice and naan bread. You can bring your own alcoholic drinks with you or you can purchase soft drinks there.

Please speak to or email Graham Fletcher if you wish to come.

If you would like to make a donation towards a leaving present please see Graham or Craig Ashton.

10 May: Shugborough Relays [Top]

Shugborough Relays take place on Wednesday 23rd June at 7.30pm. Last year we entered 15 teams (8 senior and 7 junior teams) and it would be great to enter this many teams if not more again this year. Teams are comprised of 4 competitiors, each of whom run 2 miles. It is a great night out!

If you would like to take part then:

Juniors - please speak to your coaches

Seniors - please conact Rebecca by Sunday 30th May

It costs £12 a team so that is £3 each. Please be aware that we have to enter teams (and pay!) beforehand so if you tell us that you want to run then we will enter you and will need the money ASAP. If you then cannot make it you will still need to pay your £3 but also your team will be a member down!

As always we will then go to the Holly Bush pub afterwards for sausages, chips and beer (although I need to confirm this with them). This usually costs £4 per person. Again everyone is invited but please let me know as I have to confirm numbers with the pub about 2 weeks before.

Please email Rebecca Ibbs for further details.

10 May: Newcastle 4 x 1 Mile Relays [Top]

The Newcastle 4 x 1 Mile relays are taking place on Saturday 3rd July at 2pm in Lyme Valley. This is the second race (out of 4) that the club organises each year.

Please start thinking about getting teams organised (4 people in a team). The categories are under 15 girls, under 15 boys, senior ladies, senior men, veteran ladies, veteran men and mixed (entry forms to follow).

We also need people to help set up the course, marshal and help clear away the course afterwards. Please email me back or speak to me at the club if you would be prepared to help out on the day. We set up the course from about 10am, marshals would be needed from about 1pm and the race is usually finished well before 3pm.

If you couldn't help out with the Newcastle 7 road race then this is a great opportunity for you to give something back to the club!

Please email Rebecca Ibbs for further details.

20 Apr: Newcastle 7 race review [Top]

The Newcastle 7 was again treated to great conditions as the Mayor got the 300 strong field field underway

Mark Dalkins ran out an easy winner having had to cancel plans to race abroad due to the ash cloud, with Ryan Holroyd (Staffs Moorlands) and Andy Lamont (Macclesfield Harriers) completing the top 3.

Mark Flint was first Newcastle runner back in 7th overall and first V40.

Sarah Johnson (Trentham) was a clear winner of the ladies race from our very own Michelle Buckle with Adela Salt (Trentham) in 3rd.

Click here to download the full results.

The Mayor was also kind enough to start the Fun Run and hand out the medals, with just over 20 younglings taking part.

Many thanks to our sponsors for supporting the race and fun run:

Bourne Sports, Kitchen & Bedroom Workshop, greenway pepper, Electric Light Co. and Steve James.

And a big thank you to all those who helped to organise the race and fun run and help out on the day.

The next club race will be the Newcastle 4 x 1m Relays that will held at Lyme Valley on Saturday 3rd July. Details will be posted on the site shortly.

1 Apr: No to the pavement tax! [Top]

It has emerged this week that the Government are considering introducing a new road runners levy from next year.

A spokesman for the Treasury was quoted as saying that, "It is a well known fact that the amount of force that travels through each leg when running is up to four times greater than when walking."

"Due to the popularity of running the amount of wear and tear on our pavements has reached critical levels to the extent we need to raise additional funds to repair the pot holes."

"We have worked closely with sports shoe manufacturers and we can announce that from 1st April 2011 all new running shoes will be equipped with a smart tag to monitor usage over time and distance, linked to the owner's bank account. Spikes and fell shoes are exempt."

"The levy will be based on time with an initial cost of 50 pence per shoe per hour. This is to ensure one legged runners and hoppers are covered by the new scheme."

"To allay fears that the new levy will put people off training we have carried out extensive research using laboratory animals, and found that the fitness of rabbits actually improved when using a levied wheel compared to a standard one as they strove to achieve value for money. Indeed some rabbits even gave up smoking once the experiments had concluded.

"Any additional funds will be directed towards London 2012 so I'm sure all runners will support this announcement."

30 Mar: Newcastle 7 - Can you help? [Top]

The club's annual Newcastle 7 road race takes place on Sunday 18th April 2010, starting at 10.30am with a fun run at 10.35 in the club grounds and we need your help!

Volunteers are needed to help out with the following -

Before the race:
* we want to show our club house off at its best so we need to give it a good clean beforehand. Are you available on Friday 16th or Saturday 17th April to help clean the clubhouse? (All cleaning products will be supplied)
* we need to set out the course. We will be meeting at the club house at 2pm on Saturday 17th April to do this. This involves putting out mile markers, 'caution runners' signs and car parking signs around the course.

On race day (Sunday 18th April)
* we need at least 20 marshals around the course (you would need to be at the club by 9.30am and would be finished by 12 noon at the latest)
* we need people to help give out water at the water station and at the finish
* we need people to give out the prizes to the runners after the race at the club house
* we need people to sell the refreshments at the club house

After the race
* we need to clear the course (take down all the signs)
* we need to ensure that the club house is left clean and tidy

Any time you can spare, even if its just a few minutes after the race to help tidy up, will be greatly appreciated and help the continued success of this long running event.

Please contact Rebecca for further details.

30 Mar: Keep on track... [Top]

The Committee would like to remind all members who use the track for training to be aware of the Track Rules.

The track will continue to get busier as the weather improves so all runners need to be aware of other training groups, etc, to avoid any incidents.

If you would like further guidance or have any issues please speak to your coach in the first instance.

Thank you for your continued co-operation.

8 Mar: Please sponsor Mark [Top]

Leading Vet (& Senior!) Mark Flint is taking part in a Land's End to John o'Groats charity bike ride at the end of May in aid of Diabetes UK.

He aims to complete the ride in just 10 days - a very tough challenge.

If you would like to sponsor Mark he is at the club every Tuesday night and at most Tri club sessions too.

8 Mar: Champion! [Top]

Julia will now compete for Great Britain at the World Duathlon Championships to be held in Edinburgh in September.

3 Mar: National Cross Country Champs [Top]

There was a good turnout of runners from the club in Saturday's National Cross Country Champs held at Roundhay Park in Leeds, with representation in almost all the age group races.

With many of the junior athletes competing at national level for the first time (and at the bottom of their age groups) all gave a good account of themselves, which should stand them in goodstead for the future.

Pick of the senior men was Matt Lockyer with an excellent 167th.

16 Feb: Good work fellas! [Top]

Another good turn out and a strong team performance from members new and old saw the men's team promoted back into Division 2 at the first time off asking.

Matt Lockyer was again to the fore in 2nd place and was well supported by fellow scorers Danny Egan, Paul Crisford, Steve Ratcliffe, Tim Twentyman and Martin Bailey as he lead the team to 2nd place on the day and 3rd overall.

The key element of cross country is of course team work and the team would have struggled this year without the contributions of Ian Sparks, Tom Bentley, Craig Ashton, Nigel Symms, Neil Gerrity, Mark Flint, Graham Kemp and Tony Ratcliffe - any one else!?

For the full results of the club members who took part please click here.

So on to the relay season... any takers for the 12 Stage?

2 Feb: Promotion push... [Top]

The final Birmingham League Cross Country race is on Saturday 13th Feb at Aston University Recreation Centre.

At the last race we finished second team and need to do this again to gain promotion to division 2. This means that we need as many men as possible to run the race. By having more runners out we push the other teams back a few places therefore they get less points.

If you can run please let Craig know on 07745 091670 or 775900 or email Rebecca.

As always we will meet up and share lifts to the venue.

19 Jan: Birmingham XC League report [Top]

Craig Ashton successfully harangued/persuaded 10 hardy members (and a volunteer) to make the journey to Nuneaton on Saturday for the 3rd fixture in the Birmingham XC League.

The best turn out of the season was rewarded with the lowest team score so far and a fantastic 2nd place on the day.

The team now stands in 4th overall with one fixture to go, more than respectable. A repeat performance would see Newcastle make a swift return to Division 2.

Star of the day was Matt Lockyear in an isolated 2nd, ably supported by Steve Ratcliffe, Mark Flint, Martin Bailey, Tim Twentyman and Ian Sparks.

Special mention to Neil Gerrity who made the trip but was forced to drop out due to a knee injury.

The volunteer did ok managing to only drop one finishing disk in the mud but should perhaps stick to the day job?
